This publication has some excellent tips for XP, 2K, and Windows operating systems in general.   The book is well laid out and broken down into seven chapters covering many PC areas and applications such as: Email, Windows XP, Windows Explorer, the internet, Microsoft Office, multimedia and hardware.  The index is very detailed making this book an excellent reference for future problems.

Steve Bass has put a great deal of effort in this book to cover many competing applications.  He goes into great detail to explain how to accomplish a change and will give specific instructions for Exchange, Outlook, Netscape, Eudora, and AOL for a particular annoyance.  Bass doesn’t assume an all Micro Soft environment where other environments could be a factor.

My personal favorites were on pages 48 and 54 that explained which files could be deleted to reclaim space such as restore points and old uninstall files and which files should not be removed like ServicePackFiles.  These files are used by Windows File Protection and also contain device drivers.

Steve Bass does a good job at putting humor where ever he can as well as additional information in sidebars throughout the book.  The one thing this book lacks is a CD, but they apologize by informing the reader that the priced was lowered by five dollars and proving a URL,

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/pcannoy/annoyance_download.html

to enable readers and others can download files if they are interested.

I enjoyed this book and I will miss not having it with me for handy reference and something to read while waiting for my train.
