The Top 15 Ways Windows Uses Caching to Improve Performance
Based on the book of the same name (to be released) this session will be a dive into understanding one particular technique to improve
system performance: caching. Microsoft Operating Systems (desktop or server, physical or virtual) use caching and caching-like techniques in many
different ways. In this session, Tim Mangan will reveal the top 15 ways Microsoft uses caching and demonstrate how some of those work.
Tim will include some new research and new free tools he developed to expose these caching features that have never seen anywhere before.
Tim Mangan is the Owner of TMurgent Technologies LLP, which specializes in Microsoft App-V. Previously, Tim was with many software and hardware
companies including Softricity, Sync Research, Tylink, Avanti Communications, Memotec, Teleglobe, Infinet, and ComputerVision. Somewhere in between,
he did consulting work for the WAN side of a major US bank. At one point, he was President of the Frame Relay Forum, an international consortium of
communication carriers, vendors, and users. Tim speaks at many conferences and has been awarded by Microsoft as a MVP for terminal services in 2007
and MVP for application virtualization in 2008 and since. He was also awarded Citrix Technology Professional (CTP) in 2010 and since. Tim is also

Richard Knowles - Co-Founder - VP, Advanced Technology - FilePilot Software
"Copy 60 TB in 12 Hours? It's Been Done"
If you have tried RoboCopy and SecureCopy, but keep missing maintenance and cut over windows there is
a better way to handle your next server migration, server to server DR set up, NAS upgrade, or any copy
project. This detailed vendor briefing will highlight how "wire" speed and other hardware considerations
are not typically the mitigating issue, but in fact it is the software tools being applied and how they
handle specific technical issues that normally arise. The result is a software utility called FilePilot
Copy from FilePilot Software that will be featured at the end of this presentation.
Richard has been a strategic leader of multiple engineering organizations for over 13 years. Technologies
covered are number crunching, networking, security, web, OS internals, thin client, virtualization, streaming,
storage, and real-time. The common threads that can be found in the products delivered are exceptional
performance, visually intelligent to the user, and each solves a real problem. Prior to co-founding FilePilot,
Richard was VP of Engineering at AutoVirt, a developer of virtualization software. Richard holds a BSEE from
Northeastern and an MSCS degree from the University of Massachusetts.
Meeting Sponsored by FilePilot Software (www.filepilotsoftware.com)
All members that attend will be eligible to purchase a one year, unrestricted use site license of File Pilot Copy for just $1,500.
At least two 30-day unrestricted site licenses will be raffled off as well (but anyone may download a free
evaluation copy from the company's web site at www.filepilotsoftware.com).

Sessions 1 and 2 - Must Have Utilities, What's in Your Toolbox?
Looking for tools and utilities to make your life easier? (you should be)
Members of our group will each present some of their favorite tools in a 25 minute time slot. After the meeting we will be adding a "BAWSUG Recommended"
section to the website to help our members save time on the job.
Tim Callaghan will present:
Vice-Versa, commercial, www.tgrmn.com
Utility for file synchronization, replication, backup and comparison.
Xobni, free, www.xobni.com
Microsoft Outlook add-on for instant email search, email analytics, social network discovery and more cool features.
CCleaner, free, www.piriform.com/products
Utility to clean up and optimize your windows computers. CCleaner safely removes temporary files and privacy information from Internet Explorer,
Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and Safari. It also provides a registry cleaner and is able to remove temporary files from many popular applications.
Defraggler, free, www.piriform.com/products
Defragmentation tool that differs from other offerings in that you can select which files to defragment, as opposed to defragmenting the entire disk.
Jack Daniel will present:
Nmap, free, www.nmap.org
Security scanner for network exploration and hacking.
Ted Vahey will present:
Process Explorer, free, technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Utility to display information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.
Other Utilities, free
Ted will also discuss a handful of useful tools that he's collected over the years.
Tim Mangan will present:
TMNetSim, free, www.tmurgent.com/Tools.aspx
Tim built this tool for use in his labs and has proved quite popular. It is like a bad WAN on a PC. You can control latency and loss, and inject jitter on
the connection to better simulate a shared WAN. It works on one protocol at a time to aid in the investigation of performance implications.
PingTool, free, www.tmurgent.com/Tools.aspx
Tool to throw packets around. Tim developed this tool when he was working for router vendors and needed to stress things.
It does more than just ICMP, and improperly used it can be a security risk.
